Face ID disabled randomly with iOS 17.3

I opened my phone after updating and it says Face ID has been disabled and in the Face ID screen in settings the buttons are just grayed out and you can't tap anything, it says its because a problem was detected with the true depth camera. I talked to a support person, who ran a diagnostics test and it came out saying nothing was wrong. Im wondering if there is any way I can enable Face ID again, because there is no reason for the true depth camera to not work, my phone didn't get wet or damaged or anything, its also been inside for the last week and the camera wasn't covered up either, I also tried restarting my phone and it didn't work. You can see the screen I got in the picture attached.

I am having the same issue immediately after updating to ios 17.3. I tried resetting my face ID and I get a message of Face ID not available. Is not user error or mistake, this is the update.

Same here! Immediately after updating to iOS 17.3 my Face ID ceased to work allegedly due to issues with the TrueDepth camera... A bizarre coincidence.

Would definitely appreciate official support looking into this. In the meantime, would be great if anyone could suggest a way of sorting this out. There's a feeling, however, that we shouldn't be going for this having purchased a premium device...

Yesterday night my phone did the iOS 17.3.1 update and on the morning my Face ID did not work on iPhone 13.

The night before it was working properly.

I went to an Apple Store that propose me 300€ reparation fees because it is suppose to be the hardware that stopped to work in the night.

The warranty expired 3 month ago.

I am hoping this problem will be corrected in the next update.

This is ultimately annoying as it seems to be planned obsolescence in practice by Apple. Just got off the Apple support chat, absolute waste of time. I spent roughly an hour just to determine that -- in fact -- the issue exists and the agent was unable to determine the cause. They were not able to schedule a visit in their shop for me.

Also, this story resonates much with the experiences of other people complaining about similar cases online. They chat to Apple agents, get directed to the Apple shop where they are told they need a new iPhone. That's an absolute scam.

SravanKrA,

This seems to be your canned response to everything and completely irrelevant in this case. Please stop. If you cannot give relevant and useful advice, then remain silent.

@everyone else: This is definitely another Apple fumble to get us into new phones. Granted, I've been seriously considering it for a bit since my iPad is old and really slow (RAM issue, not throttling). My phone's battery life is down to 79% as well, which means I have to recharge it frequently. Most annoying when I'm running and the phone dies. I would prefer not to replace any devices if I don't have to.

Your official reply is interesting in that you’re accusing iPhone owners suffering this glitch of having their phone repaired by an unauthorized repair shop. Especially as this is a widely reported problem with people who’ve never had their iPhones repaired. If there was a TrueDepth Camera problem before the update, wouldn’t the alert have happened when the problem occurred? Instead, this has happened to everyone as soon as the update was complete. And as you can see from the initial report above, it WAS taken to a Apple Store who could find no problem with the phone, making it an obvious software issue.

The exact same thing has just happened to me. All the same issues and prompts that have been reported below.

Face ID worked perfectly yesterday in the day and then just stopped in the evening.

I've also tried everything below and still no solution.

I need the FACE ID for banking etc so its very annoying.

Is this being fixed in an update anytime soon

Kindly reach out to the Store/Individual/Agency from whom you acquired your iPhone. They would be best equipped to confirm whether the device has undergone servicing by an unauthorized service provider.

In case you recall not encountering this message at the time of purchase and it surfaced after an update, it's important to note that this message is visible specifically on iOS 15.2 and subsequent versions. It might be beneficial to inquire about any recent updates or changes made to the device's software configuration that could have triggered this notification.

Understanding the circumstances surrounding the appearance of this message could provide insights into any alterations in the device's service history or software updates that have brought about this notice.

Camera and service history

With iPhone 12 models and later using iOS 15.2 and later you can go to Settings > General > About to see the parts and service history of your iPhone and you can see if the camera has been replaced. If the repair was done using genuine Apple parts and processes, you will see "Genuine Apple Part" next to the Camera.

  • You will see an Unknown Part  message if the camera installation is incomplete or if the camera:
  • Was replaced with a nongenuine camera
  • Was already used or installed in another iPhone
  • Isn't functioning as expected

This message doesn't affect your ability to use your iPhone or access your camera.

Battery and Display and service history

With iPhone 11 models and later, excluding iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation), using iOS 15.2 and later, you can go to Settings > General > About for the parts and service history of your iPhone. You can also find out if the display has been replaced. If the repair was done using genuine Apple parts and processes, "Genuine Apple Part" will appear next to Display.

  • An Unknown Part  message will appear if the display installation is incomplete or if the display:
  • Was replaced with a nongenuine display
  • Was already used or installed in another iPhone
  • Isn't functioning as expected

An additional message might appear that says "Apple has updated the device information for this iPhone." This means that Apple has updated the device information maintained for this iPhone for service needs, safety analysis, and to improve future products.

If your iPhone's parts have been previously replaced, repaired, or serviced by an unauthorized service provider, it's worth noting that Apple may decline to provide service for your device. The decision to refuse service will depend on the specific components that were affected by the unauthorized service.
