Go back to old OS after an upgrade

I am running a Mac mini(late 2014) with Mojave 10.14.6. The tax software I use requires 10.15 or higher this

year. I can upgrade to Monterey 12.7.3 but am concerned my printer and/or scanner may not work with new OS. Is it possible to upgrade but have a way to go back to mojave after upgrade if problems arise?

You can install the upgrade on an external drive, and verify everything works before upgrading your internal drive to it.

Then if it does not work, its just a question of selecting your internal drive during startup to return to your previous macOS version.
