iCloud behaving differently in macOs system settings iCloud preferences and Internet accounts
Problem
My iCloud account behaves differently in the macOS iCloud settings and Internet accounts sections of system settings app. I believe the internet accounts section is showing incorrect data and behaving differently.
A few examples that I've noticed.
- The messages section for example shows 0 messages to sync. Pressing sync does nothing.
- my Messages app functions normally though
- Advanced data protection when clicked shows a warning that I need to update my AppleID so my Mac can use E2E encryption however it functions normally and I have ADP set up - it does not do this from the iCloud preference pane
- pressing continue leads to the ADP interface, it shows my recovery key is off when in fact it is on.
- pressing cancel gives me "An unknown error occurred" Please try again later. with a blue @ icon - see screenshots
- Private relay and Look me up by email are present in the iCloud system settings preference pane but not in the internet accounts preference pane
Steps taken already
- Reset default keychain.
- trialled in safe mode
- Signed in and out of iCloud
- I have reinstalled OS, signed in and out again and the problem persists.
Question
My main question is this an issue with my Apple ID or an issue with my MacBook Pro? I have not had any issues with the services yet however I am concerned that this could lead to data corruption or incorrect syncing down the line as it is not behaving as I believe it should.
Background details
Mac15,3 running 14.3 Sonoma - all up to date.
iCloud + subscription with 200GB
Other possibly related issues that I was / have been having provided as further background in case they are relevant
- iCloud account photo did not sync between Mac, iPhone and iCloud web accounts, this was resolved with apple Support by changing and deleting the photo on iCloud web browser and contacts app and macOS system settings and iPhone etc repeatedly until it started working (not entirely sure what fixed this)
- Look me up by email - in iCloud settings shows an application that I deleted some years ago - the data for this application is not in my iCloud backups, I have tried reinstalling the application and denying all permissions and then deleting it again to no avail - the app still shows up in look me up by email
- Shortcuts app - my data is missing from iCloud please press continue to keep syncing data - I fixed this by signing in and out iCloud and toggling shortcuts data from the iPhone and Mac OS accounts repeatedly until it synced
