I own a 2008 macbook and would like to know how to get the lastest version it can run (Its the 2gb ram model btw) and what the lastest version is

there are two distinct MacBooks from late 2008. the aluminum model and the white or black plastic units. the plastic MacBooks can run up to and including OS X 10.7.5. the aluminum models can run up to and including OS X 10.11.6.
we need to know which one you have, and the current OS X version it is using before we can let you know if it can be upgraded.

ok, so you can upgrade to El Capitan. you can find the required downloads here > How to download and install macOS - Apple Support
and I should add that there are also late 2008 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models. they can both run up to and including OS X 10.11.6
Sorry i have the Late 2008 aluminum model Macbook (not pro or air just Macbook) running 10.5.8

I downloaded it but it says "Operaration could not be completed.
(com.apple.installer.pagecontroller error -1.)"
Then in small text "Couldn't open "InstallMacOSX.pkg"."
are you trying to skip over some macOS? if yes, I would try upgrading one macOS at a time. going from OS X 10.5.8 to OS X 10.11.6 might be too big a jump.
OK I was downloading a earlier one now
I tried the earliest version and get another error
and just to say i am running the dmg from a usb stick if that is needed to know
