I'm on Sonoma and cannot use external drive on dropbox.
Is there a way around this please?

I've been using an external drive with Dropbox for years and I run Sonoma.
For me, from the Menu Bar, it's a click on the Drobox menu: My Account Name > Preferences > Sync > Dropbox folder location
And select where you want your Dropbox files to reside.
What problem are you having?
If you're on the latest Dropbox for macOS that utilizes Apple's File Provider API, your Dropbox folder has been moved to ~/Library/CloudStorage. Changing the location of your Dropbox folder is no longer supported.
Maybe there is a way to use an alias or symlink for this, though.
I thought I was on the latest. Oh well. In truth, I fire up Dropbox when I need it, which is admittedly rare these days.
Worth a shot on the symlink, but to be honest if you rely on Dropbox, I'd just roll with it.
