Is there a component of my iMac that needs to be upgraded before i can install a higher macOS?

I have an iMac 12,2 with an intel Core i5 2.7mhz processor.the system runs on macOS 10.12.6. i need to upgrade the macOS but the apple store does not allow this. is there a component that needs to be upgraded before i can install a higher macOS? or what can I do to upgrade the macOS.

FWIW, High Sierra is the latest version of macOS a Mid 2011 iMac can run
