My 16” MBP makes a soft click or “tink” sound every time the fans start up.

I thought I was going crazy for a few days, hearing a sound that wasn’t really there. After some tests and fan monitoring, it turns out, when the fans turn on, there’s a soft click or “tink” or pop that can be heard in a quiet environment.

This sound only happens when the fans turn on. There’s no similar sound during the fans operation, nor is there a similar sound when they turn off.

I’m old enough to know that any click or sound associated with the fans (outside of air flow) is generally a bad sign. This machine is only about 2 months old. How does Apple handle this, especially with it being a highly CTO purchase?

Has anyone else run into this and how has Apple helped you with it?

if you have access to an Apple-Owned store, your appointment at the Genius Bar for a hardware issue is free, but requires an appointment.

While there, the technician will do everything they can to address your concerns. If no parts are consumed, there is generally no charge, in warranty or out.

it is possible some foreign material has settled in next to the fan.

If you run the User diagnostic, one test runs the fans at MAXIMUM for a brief period, and that might dislodge foreign material sitting near the fan.
