Phone finance is in previous partners name, what can I do?

My Girlfriends phone was purchased by her ex partner using a finance plan which ends in late April 24. She has been paying him monthly by direct debit since it Girlfriend, so although in his name, she has paid for it.

Anyways she had just received a notification saying that she could trade in the phone to receive a discount on a new phone, however it needs to verify the existing Barclays Bank loan which has been sent to his mobile. They no longer speak, he has blocked my girlfriend on everything. This has been an issue before regarding the phone being under his name, but this is the only time it is a somewhat serious issue.

What can we do?

My question is how does she figure out what it is and how does she get rid of it so her phone will be secure again?
