Add folder to itunes

I have a new Dell Inspiron laptop with Windows 11. I installed itunes. I have my music on a flash drive (D drive) and in itunes I selected "Add a Folder to library". The folder was added. When I selected a song in the album and selected "Show in Windows Explorer" it shows the path as D:\music\Album. The album is not listed on my C drive.

When I add a folder here are the steps I did

Selected "Add a Folder to library

In the Add to Library window I select my D drive. On my D drive I have my albums in a folder named Music. I select the Music folder, then select an album.

The album shows in itunes. The song will play.

The "Show in Windows explorer" show the D:\music\Album name

Am I missing something or is it a problem?

Also can't find how to put a desktop icon for itunes.

Thank

Windows, Windows 10

It will become a problem if you try to access those songs when the D drive is not connected.

If your music is usually on the C drive, then you need to have the new files there too. The usual procedure is to copy the files from the flash drive to your computer and the use Add Folder to add the folder on the C drive.

Usually, the iTunes installation procedure adds an iTunes icon to the desktop. If it's missing, you should be able to create a shortcut on the desktop by doing the following:

  • use Windows Explorer to find the iTunes application file ( it will be in either the C drive / Program Files folder or the C drive / Program files (x86) folder. It will have the iTunes icon next to it and the file type will be Application (make sure to use the application file, not any of the other similarly named files):

  • right-click the Application entry and use the menu option Send to > Desktop (create shortcut):

Another approach is to go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced and enable the option Copy file to iTunes Media folder when adding to library to ensure that when you add in content from outside of the media folder iTunes makes its own copy inside.

You can use File > Library > Organize Library > Consolidate Files when your external drive is connected to copy in any tracks already added when this option was not in effect.
