Rename attachments saved from Mail via drag and drop — macOS Sonoma

Same problem for me, but my files are being saved to Dropbox. I was able to work around by opening in Preview and renaming inside of Preview.

I’m also having this issue in 14.4.1. Any file dragged from Mail to my Dropbox folder becomes un-rename-able. It’s a real roadblock.

Relaunching Finder fixes it, but only until the next one. And I do this dozens of times a day.

More info (I'm on Sonoma 14.2.1):

Besides being unable to rename files dragged from an email to a cloud-shared drive (mine are on Dropbox), I also can't drag such a file to a different drive or another folder (I get the "not" symbol). I can't even copy it to a different drive. If I try to duplicate the file, it asks for my password for permission (but duplicates anyway if I don't give it).

If I drag it from my email to a different drive (non-shared), I can rename it as normal, but if I drag it from there to my shared folder, it become un-renamable and movable again.

In Terminal, when I list files in that shared folder, the file has normal permissions and ownership, like the rest of the files. When I list files (using ls -l), there appears to be two sorted lists of files, one after another (i.e. one set of files shows sorted a-z and then another set of files starting with a-z begins). That may be some sort of clue.

Quitting mail doesn't help. Maybe a restart will fix it, because I have other files I know I dragged from emails that I can rename. Or maybe a very recent OS update broke this.

This seems to be fixed on 14.2.1 for me, although I noticed another commenter is also on 14.2.1 but it's not working.

Is there a way to revert to how it's been for the last 10+ years?

It's still working the same as it ever has for me. I have no problem renaming them.

Where are you dropping them?

Can your rename a file in that same folder that did not originate from an email drag and drop?

Still getting the same problem, using Dropbox. It just popped up recently I'm sure. Driving me nuts since I work a lot in Dropbox. Now I have drag to a special "move to dropbox" folder on my desktop and then back to dropbox. SO aggravating

I’ve never had a problem with iCloud. There could be more to it than just a cloud service.

Happens to me too, 14.4.1 from mac mail to finder icloud drive. Very annoying.

Same here, in my case it's OneDrive.
