CGPDFService problem, sky high memory pressure and usage

I purchased an M2 in august for school and haven't had any problems until a few weeks ago. Mostly use preview, Microsoft office apps, safari, R Studio, Pymol software. I can have multiple apps open and randomly have a force quit tab appear telling me I've run out of memory (but the apps aren't using a whole lot of memory). What exactly is CGPDF Service, and how does the computer benefit from it? When I go to activity monitor I see 1-3 instances of CGPDF Service running 22GB +, memory usage red. So I force quit them but they eventually return. one time I even closed all apps and restarted for it to happen when I logged in. it's sporadically happening. I pulled out my old intel MacBook Pro from 2018 (running same macOS as my M2) and do the same task with no problems whatsoever (CGPDF never shows up and bogs down computer). Is this M-chip related? Sonoma related? Do I have a virus? Should I do a reinstall? Also, this problem does not happen in Safe Mode. At this point I keep activity monitor open so I can be vigilant and stay on top of it, as my computer will slow down in the process while I am working. It was happening on Sonoma 14.2.1 and continuing on Sonoma 14.3. I'm starting to get very annoyed, as a student my computer is everything to be able to do work. I've been a longtime Mac user so I am perplexed at the disfunction of my computer.

MacBook Air, macOS 14.3

Again, today they started to run after I was done using Preview. I was simply surfacing the web on safari with activity monitor open. I did run the etrecheck and it found no major problems. I guess I will use my old Mac; this is a nuisance.

Could you post that EtreCheck report? You can always access your previous reports under File > Previous reports while running EtreCheck itself.

EtreCheck can't uncover the cause of complex problems like this just by running it. What it does is reports on lots of other data points. By combining 3 or 4 of those various data points together, we might be able to take an educated guess about what is causing this.

Also, in Activity Monitor, try running it in Hierarchical mode. All of those CGPDFService processes are started at the same time. Hierarchical mode might show what process started them. Also, you can use the "info" ⓘ button to find out more about a process, such as who started it, what it's doing, etc. You can post that information here in a reply too.

I use Preview when viewing pdfs. at one time I've had all apps closed the CGPDF will run; upon restarting, logging on it started running immediately without any apps or files open. I have a pdf textbook that is around 140MB; 1000+ pages, but I only look at certain pages at a time. when I have it open preview memory starts at 400MB and slowly rises to 1.5GB when I scroll through pages and zoom in and out and annotate. But again usually just reading a few pages per session not the whole book. I can view the pdf without problems on my older Mac, but I want to use my M2 for my work. the CGPDF will run when I am not viewing any pdfs.
