airpods pro won't stop adaptive transparency mode

AirPods Pro are currently in use with iPhone and iPad, occasionally with MBP. I tried adaptive transparency mode for the first time while at work and it was great for all the interruptions where I need to just answer a quick question and can do that now without having to reach up to my ears. But....it won't stop doing that, even though I clicked it to 'noise cancellation' on both iOS devices (and the Mac is not set for BlueTooth at present. I do not want it to mute my volume when I am watching a video and make a comment to my cat.

How did it get 'stuck' here, and how can I stop it?

Do I have to do a factory reset to kill this mode?
