Same problem; was able to record using the Voice recorder app and volume was great on playback - but no sound on movie recordings.
Needle in the small mic hole on top solved it perfectly.
Thanks.
iPhone 4
iOS 5
It Worked, thank you
Poking with a needle didn't help but I found another solution: go to YouTube and play a video. If there's no sound, turn it up with the volume buttons on the side. Now go back to camera and you should be able to record with sound!
Going to the YouTube app and turning the volume up works. I spent days trying to figure this out. If you have the same problem this is most likely the solution.
For whatever odd reason, make sure on any game apps your volume is all the way up. I had the same issue, mics not covered, volume all the way up, checked settings, but by going to a game app (angry birds) i turned volume up and then checked the camera video recording and sound was 100%
I have the same issue - no sound on any video recording app. Also, when I put my phone on speaker phone - I can hear them but they can't hear me - take it off of speaker phone and they hear me fine. Face to Face doesn't work because they can't hear me. All other apps for recording my voice work fine (Dragon Dictation, All In Notes etc).
Transferring the videos onto my laptop - still no sound. (I was at Coldplay last night and so this ***** big time - I had no idea sound wasn't working till this morning).
I tried the pin trick. Nope. Tried the volumes on games. Nope.
And the bumper on my phone has a cut-out for the 'small hole' beside the headphone plug in.
My warrenty long ran out on my iPhone 4 so I doubt I will be getting a new one if I take it in. Any other suggestions?
I just bought a different video recording app to see if that would solve the issue and it didn't. So it doesn't work with the iPhone Camera app, Super 8, or Capture. Sv¢ks for me.
ShaneMcFamous Thanks!
Turning up the Volume all the way in a game first, then opening the Apple iPhone 4S video recorder worked first time! So its a software issue allowing a Game previously played at a low volume to keep control of the iPhone's video playback volume settings even after the game has been long closed.
All my old video recordings that I thought had no sound with them now have perfect sound quality and volume control to go with the great video quality!
Don't put pins in your iPhone untill you have tried this fix first!

Thanks Ge3k. Your solution solved the problem. Now i can record video with voice loud and clear.
Also, while we're admitting what we overlook - I recently botched a graduation recording and later a reall cool shot of some wild animals near my home. Video was normal, but no audio. Well... I believe now that while at the graduation, I had politely muted my phone (which I believe cut out audio recording) and when I was recording the awesome mini-herd of javelinas, I had my earphones plugged in (I believe this also cut out the audio). So... My bad!!!
I saw this vid on youtube after I tried all the suggestions above seems like the most likely solution to me
there is more than one mic in you phone ...

REAL SOLUTION HERE: I found this thread through Google because all of the sudden, my video camera was not recording audio either. Rather than ***** holes in my MIC like some of you guys have recommended for WHATEVER reason, I found the soltuion which is quite easy after toying around with my iPad. On the side of your iPad is a little rocker/toggle switch. If you turn this on and off, you will see a BELL with a level indicator much like your volume. Chances are, when you see this BELL and its levels - and you are NOT able to record audio, then the level will be set all the way down. You will need to increase this level.
To do this, go to Settings>General>Sounds
Then edit your Ringer and Alerts - turn this on, then use the slider to move all the way up.
Now go back to your camera, record some video and viola! You now have video WITH AUDIO.
Don't no why this would control the mic volume but it does. You're welcome.
SOLVED SOLVED
Remove any of your casing from iPhone
There is a small hole just near to Headphone pin hole
If that hole is covered with some Protector or anything else (People usually use lemination or some sticker stuff to save the iPhone body ring)
Open that hole with a help of needle
Your video recording sound will work perfect
THANXX
iPhone 4S: Same no-video-audio-recording problem. tried various solutions - nothing worked...
