thank you so much,I was so frustrated about the whole lot! I tried everything and your solution really worked thank you!🙂
Make sure your video volume is not on mute. If it is, there will be no sound when recording a video.
i.e. When watching a recorded video on your phone, if you put it on mute and not turn it back up, any proceeding video recorded will not have sound.
I too had this problem and this was my solution.
I tried to clean it but no positive result!
Does it mean that I have to send it for hardware repir or to replace this microphone?
Thank you

Same problem; was able to record using the Voice recorder app and volume was great on playback - but no sound on movie recordings.
Needle in the small mic hole on top solved it perfectly.
Thanks.
iPhone 4
iOS 5
When I connect Air Plug and then record video it works fine! however, without it a Hizzzz sound !!!
Latest update does not solve the porblem!
I had the same problem but then I heard from somebody that it's a problem caused by the last update for iOS 7.0... After I updated my iPhone to the new iOS 7.1.1 the volume came back. So I recommend you to update your iPhone because that will work! Have a good day!
Thanks a lot this worked for me!!.
i hope in the video you clicked the "ads" so i can get 0.1$ for saving your *** by buying a new iphone or even worst sending it to apple official maragkos - mastrothanasis
huhuhu. I can here my voice using voice memo but when I record a video it has no sound. I already tried cleaning the mic but it has no dirt. I also checked if there is an app that is being muted. And I go to youtube as what they suggested. But it is still not working! I think this problem started when I updated my iphone to OS 7.1.2. Please help.
I can tell there are many different issues with the iPhone 4. I went from first to last post and tried EVERY suggestion.
The one that worked for me was putting in the headphones and adjusting the volume. I did not know that the volumes were different that way. I had my phone volume up in everything I could find, so imagine my surprise when I put in my headphones and found the volume very low.
I turned it up and voila I can record sound on my videos. I am wondering though what the true problem is. I have videos on my phone and some have sound and some do not, that were taken when the volume was low (I know this because I NEVER use the headphone jack on my phone. Not once in almost 2 years) The videos are in order so it seems to me to be an intermittent problem. If I have this happen again while the volume is still up I will get rid of the iPhone and go elsewhere.

SOLUTION...
I had this exact problem on my brand new iPhone 5s. Hissing when playing back videos I'd recorded and the voices sounding like they are a million miles away. Voice memo recording was fine, it only affected video recording.
I PEELED OFF THE PLASTIC FILM ON THE BACK OF THE PHONE AND THE PROBLEM IS GONE.

I had the same problem on iphone 5s. The issue is due to covering the microphone in between camera and led flash light. If you have a plastic protection on your back just make a hole with pin on the plastic where the microphone is problem solved!
Please like the post if this helps you 🙂
YYou can try removing the others apps that controlling the camera
i I tried it for iphon4, iOS 7.1.2 it woks fine
it looks like sort of priority about controlling the mic
i sent a massage for apple as a feedback Tilly them that but for now no answer
