How to unlock iPhone?

I had bought an IPhone 14 Plus back in August for my brother. I bought with my Verizon plan. My brother was doing good at the time and it seemed like something nice to do. Pretty soon after he relapsed. In one of his episodes he locked the phone for life. He’s been in a hospital for a few months and I’m still paying for this phone. I tried reaching out to Apple and I showed proof of purchase that the phone is mine and they denied me. I’m still paying for this phone and don’t know what to do. I cancelled the Verizon line and they allowed me to continue paying the balance of the phone little by little. I want to unlock the phone either sell it and put that into the balance or use it myself since I have an IPhone 12. I don’t know what to do at this point. By the way there was no explanation as to why they won’t unlock it. If this has happened to other people maybe we can file a class action against them.
