Manage kids photos

Hi. Both of my kids phones were set up with default settings, so photos backed up to iCloud, which is now full and they need room on their phones. I just got a newer iMac so now running Ventura instead of High Sierra. I would like to pull the kids photos to an external drive. I just turned off iCloud for photos for my daughter's phone. Her phone does not show up in my Photos app on my iMac, nor in ImageCapture. On my older iMac, I could access other family members phones (I download my husband's photos to my Photos library, but I would like to keep my kids' separate). I am wondering if won't recognize the phone with a different Apple ID even if they are in my family sharing. I have seen that signing out of my Apple ID and signing into another one might cause issues. When I plug my phone into the iMac, it shows up under devices, but my husbands and kids don't. so...

1) can I use Photos to get photos off of other devices without signing into their Apple ID?

2) If I sign into another Apple ID on my computer will it merge our photos, etc and cause a mess

3)Would creating new users on the iMac keep our photo libraries separate?

4) would another option, like AirDrop be the only way to do it? Or maybe a drive that connects directly to phone

If you want to have your kid's photos in a Photos library a new joint, user account would be the easiest to do. Then you can create a new library and connected each of the kid's iPhones in turn to it with the charging cable and import directly into the library. You'll have to make that library the System Photo Library for that user account.

Do not select "Delete after import" as there are too many incomplete imports and complete deletions. After you're verified that the import was complete you can use Image Capture to select and delete all of the photos you'll like from each iPhone.

If they want to keep their photos separate then create another user account (non administrative like the first) and let each kid have their own user account. You can set parental guidelines for each account.
