Audio stops on iPhone when screen locks

There have been multiple posts about this issue, but has anyone found a resolution? On my iPhone 12, any audio that I am playing stops when the screen locks. This can be in Safari, or You Tube, or any other audio app. It started for me sometime last year and continues under iOS 17.3. It does not happen on my iPad - just the iPhone. It happens whether I'm using the iPhone on wi-fi, or over a cellular connection, whether I'm in the car on Apple Car Play or at home using ear buds or with the iPhone on speaker. The only way I can listen to anything of length on the iPhone is to change the screen lock timing to its maximum (5 minutes) and hope that I continue to remember to refresh the screen before the 5 minutes are up. I don't remember which iOS update triggered it, but I can't find any way to break through so that an entire podcast, or audio program, will play.

Others have posted about this same issue but it appears to be spotty -- not everyone seems to be suffering it. Has anyone who has faced it found a solution?

I’m now experiencing the same thing and I just updated with the latest iOS 17.4.1 and I have the iPhone 13 mini. Yesterday I could play mp4s that had been sent to me over gmail - mostly meditations from my teacher - now these stop after my phone screen locks. Incredibly frustrating and frankly seems like bad development work on Apple’s part. Can Apple respond please with a fix?
