My “Messages” app seems stuck in landscape mode. How can I put it back to auto rotate?

Open Control Center, by swiping down from the top right hand corner of your screen. Look for the icon, which looks like an @ sign with a lock in it. It's likely red. Tap it turn off the lock.

Do you by any chance have Display Zoom turned on? That will prevent the message app from rotating.
Settings > Accessibility > Zoom (should be set to off).
There may be a hardware issue with your accelerometer and it might make sense to schedule an appointment at your Apple Store Genius Bar for evaluation.
I looked at control center and my lock was not red and opened but my phone won’t rotate from landscape what else can I try
