If it is not done by you, please go to your Apple ID iCloud.com/find or use “Find My” App to remove the device from your account to unlink it.

so my iphone was stolen 1-2 months ago since then I’ve enabled the lost mode on that device and been tracking in FindMy to see if there were any updates on the phone. The Iphone failed to show last location and is been switched off for sometime now. I received the above imessage claiming to be apple. Is this an attempt to unlink my phone from appleid so that the thief can reset the iphone!?

I think you are correct in your last sentence.

Read this support article about what to do if a iPhone or iPad is lost or stolen -->

Find your lost iPhone or iPad with Find My - Apple Support

Note that if you remotely erase your device as instructed in this article, if you subsequently remove it from your account as in this article --> Check your Apple ID device list to find where you're signed in - Apple Support , then according to this article --> How to remove Activation Lock - Apple Support you remove activation lock from the device. That means if it was stolen, then a finder or thief now has a working device that can be used by another person.
