Thunderbolt Display A1407 not connecting to Mac Studio 2022 A2615

Hello, We already have one LED Cinema Display (Model Number is A1316) connected which works fine through the hardwired thunderbolt cable with an adapter to USB C.

We have recently invested in a 2nd screen which is a A1407 and trying to connect it but so far its just not showing anywhere. In displays in system preferences, it only shows one being connected.

First of all we thought it was the hardwired cable as that was looking very worn so we bought a thunderbolt cable and that's unsuccessful also. The power is going through it because the USB ports are working but no display is coming up or being detected at all.

Are they uncompatible?

The LED A1316 display uses Mini DisplayPort. The Thunderbolt A1407 uses Thunderbolt 2. The plugs look similar and will fit both Mini DisplayPort and Thunderbolt sockects, but are not compatible.

The LED display needs a Mini DisplayPort to USB-C adapter to work with one of the USB-C or Thunderbolt ports on the Mac Studio. This adapter won't work with a Thunderbolt display, even though the plugs will fit,

The Thunderbolt display needs a Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 adapter.

This adapter won't work with a non-Thunderbolt display, even though the plugs will fit,

This adapter must plug int a Thunderbolt port on the Mac Studio. On some models of the Mac Studio the front ports are only USB-C, not Thunderbolt (no lightning bolt icon). If you have one of those, use one of the rear ports. They are al Thunderbolt.

We have the same issue. I have purchased the Apple adapter USB-C to TB2 but still no signal on the A1407 monitor.

The monitor works with old Macbook pro 2014, doesn't work with new Mac Mini 2022 or Macbook pro 2018. Old Apple monitor A1267 works will all the Mac products.

A1267 is the LED Cinema Display (24-inch). It takes Mini DisplayPort input.

2014 MacBook Pros have Thunderbolt 2 ports with Mini DisplayPort connectors. The Mac senses what you plug in, and would

  • offer a Mini DisplayPort signal to the 24" LED Cinema Display.
  • offer a Thunderbolt signal to the 27" Apple Thunderbolt Display.

Thus both displays would work.

The 2018 MacBook Pro and 2022 Mac mini have USB-C (USB, DisplayPort, Thunderbolt) ports.

  • To connect a Mini DisplayPort monitor like the 24" LED Cinema Display, you would use a third-party USB-C to Mini DisplayPort adapter. You would not use the Apple Thunderbolt 3-to-2 adapter. That adapter only knows how to translate Thunderbolt. It wouldn't provide a usable signal to a Mini DisplayPort display or adapter, even if "the plugs fit."
  • To connect the 27" Apple Thunderbolt Display, you would use the Apple Thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter. The 27" Apple Thunderbolt Display (model A1407) requires Thunderbolt input and will not work with Mini DisplayPort input.

The symptoms you describe are exactly the ones I would expect if the "Apple adapter USB-C to TB2" is not the Apple Thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter, but is in fact a third-party USB-C (DisplayPort) to Mini DisplayPort adapter.

  • A USB-C (DisplayPort) to Mini DisplayPort adapter would work with the LED Cinema Display; you say that the A1267 display is working with both of your USB-C-equipped Macs.
  • A USB-C (DisplayPort) to Mini DisplayPort adapter would not work with the 27" Thunderbolt Display; you say that the Thunderbolt Display does not work when connected to your USB-C-equipped Macs.

Anyone know how to fix this issue?

Use one of these to connect the 27" Apple Thunderbolt Display (model A1407) to your 2022 Mac mini or to your 2018 MacBook Pro. Use it only to connect that display – not to connect others.
