connecting iPad to MacBook via hdmi cable

I've connected my iPad to my MacBook using an HDMI cable, but my MacBook doesn't see the iPad - Can I transfer stuff from my iPad via this cable or not - assuming it eventually sees my iPad.

or do I have to use a usb lead into the MacBook for it to see my iPad?

thanks

Jill

HDMI is a video output only. The mac has no video Input capabilities on its own, sop not surprised its not doing anything when connected to the iPad over HDMI.

You cannot use HDMI for data transfer. You need to use USB for that.
