One more time memory leak in macOS 14.3 Sonoma MacBook M2

memory leak in macOS 14.3 Sonoma MacBook M2 Max

96 GB 8 TB

Starts at 83GB and then goes down in a matter of seconds to 23MB

I did the usual:

  • reset memory in Terminal with sudo purge
  • Reset memory by shutting down and then switch on pressing then control + command + P + R

Nothing is marking it better.

Just because the system is using most of the RAM does not necessarily mean there is a memory leak.

Do you get "Your system has run out of application memory" alert?

macOS tries to use up as much RAM as possible, by design.

Doing sudo purge goes against and you should really not do it.

Now there COULD be a memory leak somewhere, but we need more information to try and figure out what the problem is.

First, keep a look on Activity Monitor and see what is using a lot of memory.

What do you seen in the area at the bottom reporting "memory pressure", "application memory", and "cached files"?

Mine looks like this:

Just so as long the memory pressure remains green, it's fine.

I do have some swap used, but then I have run my mac for days, and often have 15 apps open and many Safari tabs, so it's not very surprising.

With your 96GB there should be zero or a tiny amount of swap space.

The problem turned out to be with Spotlight Indexing taken all the memory available.

I stop Spotlight in the command line using:

sudo mdutil -a -i off

and then wait for a while so I can do my work and after then I turn in on again before I went to sleep with:

sudo mdutil -a -i on

in the morning the Spotlight indexing was done so I could continue working from home.

Is this going to happen every time my Spotlight is indexing?
