Editing photos on mac

The editing tool is grayed out I have always edited my photos on the Mac for slideshows, printing pictures etc. I am unable to access the editing tool

MacBook, OS X 10.11

Are you saying that when you go to "Image>Show Edit Tools" that the line is grayed out? Is this for all pictures or for just a few? What happens when you select a picture and hit return? Please give us more information.


Have you tried re-starting the computer? Have you tried re-starting in Safe Mode?

          Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support 


If that doesn't work, you should try making a new Library (close Photos and option-click on the Photos icon) and put a few pictures in it to see if the problem continues there.
