Without knowing the model year of the iMac we cannot help. To get to Mac OS 12 (Monterey), you need a:

- iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015)
- iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, Late 2015)
- iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2015)
If your iMac is an earlier model that means it simply does not meet the hardware requirements. To answer your next question (can I upgrade the iMac) that answer is no, you will need to replace it with a more up-to-date Mac.
