I forgot my screen passcode on my iPad. What do I do?

with new iOS I added a passcode. Now I can’t remember the passcode . I try a few times and the iPad becomes unable to try again for 15 minutes. I have tried using Apple support written instructions to put iPad into recovery mode. Recovery mode never pops up. What do I do from here?
