If the problem is not a faulty cable, and not some debris wedged into the socket, and the port is somehow damaged, then contact Apple Support and discuss your options and alternatives with them.
I'm not sure your "broke" is the same as the original "broke" in this thread.
Here, force a restart, then contact Apple. Hold the third button press until the Apple logo appears, continuing to hold that third press past any sliders that might appear.
I had the exact same problem today. Everything was fine. The port was working OK as it was used to access the iPhone for an update. It then would not update on restart. The cable would not allow me to connect to my computer, not would an identical unused one. The ONLY EXPLANATION is that the update bricked the connection somehow. I am more than upset as I am disabled and cannot possibly do without a phone, or reach an Apple store over 50 miles away. The joke about contacting apple support without a working phone is beyond unacceptable. Hasn't Apple heard of at least operating a chat or email service on their site?
[When I plug or unplug my phone the computer clearly recognizes that a device is being reached. So the problem is internal and likely Apple's software update. ]
I was in my Windows iTunes when a message popped up to login to the Apple Store. I did so. This then seemed to force an iTunes update on Windows. This then reactivated the restore process on the iPhone which firstly reset to factory and then commenced to do a full restore from the last backup. Crossing my fingers that this works.
[So clearly the "connect to computer" issue was indeed a software issue and not a damaged cable or USB port. Somewhat deceptive of Apple not to mention any of this before I accepted the IOS update, nor to suggest this might be the problem.]
