Original date and time

Why can't I see the original date and time of a photo that has been sent to me via email. This used to work. Now it only shows the time I received the photo. I need this for work to show proof of work done

Maybe the internal metadata date has been stripped from the image? Many social media sites like Facebook, WhatsApp etc strip internal metadata from images and movies.

The most important EXIF 'DateTimeOriginal' tag can be checked in macOS Finder > Show Preview > Show More > 'Content Created' date in the right side panel. Or in Preview.app > Tools > Show Inspector > i > Exif > 'Date Time Original' field which shows also the possible Time Zone info.

That proof is very easy to forge. A slightly better proof would be a photo of a day's newspaper besides the work done...
