Iphone 4 wont rotate

Hello, my new iphone 4 will not rotate screen when using al applications that have that capability. such as calculator and safari. I've tried to shake it very hard when the calculator is open, and then it will rotate but go back again. I dont know if this issues came with 4.0.2 since i upgraded the phone before i started to use it.

So please anyone have a good explination for this?
i dont wont my first apple experience to be a bad one 😟

ps. the rotate lock is NOT on

Have you tried a hard reset? Hold the home button and the sleep/wake button until the apple logo appears (ignore the red slider).

If that did not fix the issue, then try restoring your iphone to it's factory settings and and restore from back up there.

just tried that. No luck =( i have restored it several times already but that does not seem to fix anything either

if nothing else, then call apple or make an appointment at your local apple store and see if you can get a replacement. Seems like the accelorometer is dead or something.

If you have a circle with an arrow showing on the top line you have locked it to not rotate in the portrait mode. To unlock double click the home key to display the apps running and drag to the right to reveal the iPod controls. To the left of these is the icon to unlock the mode.

the OP did mention that the lock was not on.

Not that you need reassurance, but I can confirm that Kwopau may be right. My friend had the same problems with his i4. He took it to the genius bar, and apparently they told him that the unit was damaged in shipping causing the accelerometer to malfunction or not function properly, if at all. Hopefully a trip to the local Apple store will sort out any mishaps with your phone.

Based on the info you gave us, your best option is to take it to your nearest Apple Store or call Apple Support.

Does auto rotation not work in all your apps or just a certain app. If it works in mail and Safari but not another app, it may be the app. Just delete the app and reload it. Don't worry when you go to download it again it, you won't be charged for it. It will tell you that you all ready paid for it and start loading. If that does not solve the issue then make an appointment at the local Apple Store and you get a brand new iPhone!

I have been having the same problem since I installed the latest OS update (4.1?) auto rotate works in mail, calculator, stocks; everything but Safari. I checked the orientation lock and it is off. I even tried turning it on and off again. Not sure what is going on. Anyone else having this issue? Not sure what to do!?

Try Resetting your iPhone by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, +ignoring the slider+. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings. Note that this is different from a Restart.
