Encryption available in formatting usb drives on MacOs 2020 with Sonoma

I am reformatting some usb drives. Is there a best recommended formatting and is there encryption involved in any formatting option for secure information that might be on the usb drive or intended for it?

Samsung T9 SSD External Drive - Encryption Via Apple Products? Hello, I just purchased a Samsung T9 external SSD and was under the understanding that it would be a good companion for my new Mac Studio (as well as various other Apple machines). Before this new Mac Studio, I had a late 2017 (souped-up) iMac. The T9 communicated great with it and I was able to use their Samsung Magician software that came with it. Anyways, upon plugging it into my MS I was alerted the the fact that it would not run the Samsung Magician software without restarting the machine and allowing permissions to load kernel extensions. I really have zero interest in lowering my overall security settings on my new Mac... so here is my question: Is there a way to reformat the (empty T9) to a Mac friendly format and then use some sort of built in Mac OS tools to completely password protect (encrypt) all of the files on the T9. I really have NO commitment to the Magician software, all I want to do is have my files have a high level of privacy. Thank you!

formatting external drive on M1 mac doesn't have MacOS with encryption Hi, I'm re-formatting an external drive on a macbook M1 (ventura) & I notice that the option to format MacOS (journaled, extended or encrypted) isn't available. It only allows that with AFPS, which I don't want to use as I have another older mac that I also want to use the drive with. Any ideas or other ways that don't use third party software to encrypt the drive so it needs a password to access? Thanks.
