Saving to the cloud

have a MacBook Pro with very little free space. I have connected to it an external drive with 1 terrabyte of data that I want to copy to the iCloud. I get a message that says I don’t have enough free space on my MacBook to copy the data to the icloud. Can’t I copy the data on my external drive directly to the iCloud? If I can’t get the 1 terrabyte of data on the iCloud it’s of no use to me.

Anything in iCloud will also sync to your computer. You can elect to optimize files but trying to put 1TB of data onto a computer with much less space is futile at best.
