I need to bring my iMac from 2011 to a store for decommissioning and recycling. The computer is quite heavy and I cannot carry it from my car to a store (most of which near me are located deep inside shopping malls. Any ideas on the best way to accomplish this? Apple advised that its store employees would not pick up the computer from my car

You do not have to take it to an Apple Store.

You can take it to your local E-Waste Recycler.
At our local E-Waste Recycler, all you have to do is pull up and they will unload it from your vehicle.
I took mine to Best Buy. If none near you, do a search on recycling computers/electronics. I too have an older iMac--2009, that I will be recycling soon...and would be in the same boat if I had to take it to an Apple Store. Hope this helps.
