Which all-in-one mono laser printer will work with new iMac OS14 Sonoma?

I’ve just bought a new M3 iMac which runs OS14 Sonoma, and I want to buy a monochrome all-in-one print/scan/copy laser printer to work with it. Home use only, so ideally less than £150. I have spent hours going through specifications, but I can’t work out which products will be fully compatible. A couple of products with AirPrint from HP and Brother in the £120-£150 range look as though they might be ok, but it’s not at all clear how the scan function would integrate.

Can anyone who has successfully matched an all-in-one laser printer to an iMac running OS14 offer some product recommendations?

TIA

Mike

I gave up trying to find an all-in-one. I bought a Brother HL-2400DW laser printer and a Canon Lide scanner, both AirPrint. Very happy with the result. The printer, in particular, is great. Very fast, single and double-sided, large paper capacity etc, and it’s great being able to print wirelessly from all my Apple devices Total cost was a bit more than I wanted to spend - about£160 - but well worth it.

if the model has drivers for sonoma then one would assume that the driver would include both printing and scanning

and for abandoned scanner models by the manufactorer can only get scanning working using

VueScan Scanner Software for macOS, Windows, and Linux (hamrick.com)

supporting airprint would rarely mean they don't have a native printer driver and scanner driver for models they still support

given the bad rep hp have these days then if it was me then I would for brother, epson, canon or the likes and check that they have a macOS 14 driver on their site

The new multi-function device states that it is Apple AirPrint compatible in its literature, or one of those already listed in AirPrint. When networked and supported in AirPrint, one is no longer dependent on punctual or even sustained device driver support for retained compatibility with the current release of macOS.

Although AirPrint will enable scanning through Apple's Image Capture or Preview, an optional cost alternative may be VueScan Professional which is supported on over 7000+ scanners. Some support scenarios do require functional vendor drivers and the VueScan site lists all supported scanners by vendor and for a given scanner model, an information page indicating whether a vendor driver is or is not necessary.

I have used VueScan Professional since 2010 on a couple of Canon Scanners. I have never paid any software upgrade fee and never received any benefits from the VueScan vendor for mentioning their product here.

The Xerox work center 3025 I bought today to replace my 13 year old Xerox Work Center isn’t compatible. Xerox doesn’t offer a Sonoma 14.5 driver and my mac doesn’t have an app to open it. The support person at Xerox told me to return the printer. So much for Xerox printers. Perhaps I should have bought a simple printer without a scanner.

Thanks for that Rudegar.

I have various devices as well as the new Mac with which I would like to be able to print, and AirPrint seems ideal for this. At the same time I want to be able to scan documents, and for this I assume I will also need a wired (USB) connection, and OS14 compatibility. So far I have not been able to identify a reasonably priced mono laser printer/scanner that supports both OS14 and AirPrint.

I can't be the only one with this requirement, and was hoping to hear from someone who had found a solution.

My Canon Pixma MG3620 wouldn't work with sonoma. I was using a usb and it couldn't find the drivers, though it worked several months prior to the 14.4 update. My roommate had the same issue with the same printer, but a different mac, but he threw the printer away, because Macs use to automatically download drivers once they were connected to the printer.

Has this changed?

I've been looking over forums concerning the same issue with Sonoma and printers and it seems ubiquitous.

Does Apple plan on fixing the issue?

How does a computer novice fix said issue?

And how does someone choose the right kind of (cheap) printer that will hopefully work with Sonoma with the fewest issues?

I would do as the Xerox rep said and return it. The 3025 hasn't been made for at least a few years. You need to get something current. And also a step up. Getting the cheapest model also means the shortest amount of time it will be supported.

Here's the current list of multi-function color printers.

Avoid the C235 for the reason stated above. It won't get very many years of support.

The C315 wouldn't be a bad choice, but the C325 has replaced it and is slightly cheaper besides. Either of these supports AirPrint and Ethernet. They also have current drivers for Sonoma.
