My 2011 iMac is currently operating on High Sierra. Is it possible to update to a newer OS, possible in increments?

You may want to consider installing Firefox 115 ESR. Mozilla says that they will provide "critical security updates" for it until September 2024. ("After this, no security updates will be provided and you are strongly encouraged to move to a supported version of macOS.")

+1 on Servants of Cats' excellent advice re FireFox ESR. We are using it without issue on a 2011 iMac 21.5" running hHigh Sierra and it does what we need.
