NordVPN slow to reconnect after MacBook is opened

I've been using NordVPN for years on a variety of devices without problems.

I have 20121 MacBook Pro with M1 chip running Sonoma 14.2.1 and NordVPN 18.14.6 (ie all up to date)

I rarely reboot, I just close the MacBook when I'm done and open it to get started

In that last few weeks when I open the MacBook I don't have an internet connection (by speediest) but if I go to NordVPN app and force it to connect then all is well. I have rebooted several times and restarted my Fios router with no apparent affect

So my question is two-fold... is anyone else experiencing similar issues, and what may I try to resolve this. I have googled but found no recent articles on this.

Thanks for your reply and inforamtion. I read the other post thread and the CR white paper.

I did contact NordVPN and their help "bot" told me to switch the protocol to OpenVPN(TCP) and it does seem to have fixed the issue. however, if I'm understanding the CR report correctly OpenVPN is not a very secure choice.

From the CR paper I take that MullVad is the best VPN and from the other thread and your reply to me that VPN is a wast of time/money., which would seem to be conflicting opinions

So bottom line is that I'm a rather confused as to if I should stay with Nord, switch to MullVad or just let my ISP have my data unrestricted. A bit more self education is called for I think... I'll write back here if I learn anything useful.

Client-side VPNs—the ones hyped in TV adverts—are unneeded by the majority of end users who buy them. They add nothing but trouble for most users and will slow your computer.

As most of the senior contributors here feel that way, I recommend you contact Nord support for help if you are determined to keep questionable high-overhead software. After all it is not an Apple product.

EDIT: I researched this and found another post in these forums from March 2023. The initiating person asked about VPNs and then answered his own question by finding this Consumer Reports White paper:

It suggests that the VPN segment as a whole is not as careful with security as they claim we should be.

Unless you are using a VPN to create a secure point to point tunnel to a private company, school, or other private network a VPN provides no security. Use secure protocols like https, sftp, etc. and no one has access to your data. Using a public VPN provides no security and reveals your data to the VPN provider to do with as they wish.
