Request, send, and receive payments in Messages on iPhone (U.S. only) - Apple Support

Make sure you actually are sending cash to friends – and not random scammers. If anyone contacts you out of the blue, and says that you have to pay them in gift card codes, online cash transfers, etc., it's a scam. Don't respond, and don't let them clean you out.
