Epson scanner 2480 Perfection and Monteroy

This trusty scanner of slide film still works fine on an older machine, so typically Apple make it unworkable no driver on Monteroy. Some people here and found ways around. I tried the idea of installing as if big Sur. But although got a device recognition, got a message, 'failed to make connection to device, -21345'. Very sad, either one keeps older machines as they work for one machine but browsers become outdated, and then have to get newer machines to be safer. Crazy annoying business. Went back to older machine and it worked fine. Epson/Apple don't do this.

Vanessa,

That ICA nomenclature from Epson means it is a driver that allows Apple's built-in Image Capture utility to detect the scanner. It is not an Epson scanning utility.

If you want a more robust scanning application that supports this scanner without any vendor drivers necessary, then consider the free trial of VueScan Professional.

I purchased VueScan Professional in 2010 for what was already an unsupported Canon scanner at that time. I have never paid any addtional money to the VueScan vendor for frequent updates over the years, nor do I receive any benefit from that vendor for mentioning their produce here.

Another vote for VueScan. I bought Vuescan Pro a few years ago. I've used LaserSoft's SIlverfast software with my two film scanners since about 2002, and have mostly abandoned it in favor of VueScan.

Silverfast is tied to specific scanner models, while VueScan supports many. If you have two scanners, two versions of Silverfast have to be purchased. It's not cheap.

I have had somewhat better results from VueScan with shadow detail compared to SIlverfast. (This could be an operator issue, of course.)

VueScan supports my 20+-year-old Epson flatbed, and my Polaroid SprintScan 4000+ film scanner, which I think I bought in 2002. The final version of the Silverfast software for my Polaroid scanner is version 6.6, and I don't believe it works with OS versions after Snow Leopard.

Kudos to Hamrick for building this exceptional, affordable tool.

Hamrick supports over 7000 scanners, which they list on their site. That gives you future flexibility should you choose to replace the Epson 2480 device in the future.

I had an ancient Canon N650U flatbed scanner here that VueScan still supported clear into macOS 14.3, but chose to upgrade to an $89USD Canon LiDE 400 as it is supported by VueScan, and natively by macOS via a USB-C connection and Apple's built-in AirPrint technology.

The VueScan software can automatically OCR scanned documents when saving to PDF, making the PDFs searchable. Otherwise, one would need to purchase a PDF Editor in order to accomplish the OCR process on pre-existing scanned documents.
