No matter what I do, I can not have another web browser other than Safari as the default web browser, even when I change it in the System Settings -- Desktop & Dock. Oh, it says "Firefox" or "Chrome," but the setting does not take effect, even after restarting and doing other all sorts of troubleshooting, like clearing the caches, etc. Anyone else have this issue? Solutions?
Some things like webloc files always open with Safari, but others like links in e-mail, for example, should open with whatever is the default browser. For example, if you read this in your mail application and click the link, where does it take you?
I have the same problem. The solution proposal in the documentation doesn't work.
The workaround that I found was:

What happens when in Firefox >> Setting
Make Default ?
This may just help change things
Though, your previous method should Just Work without this extra step
you can easily change the default browser on Mac: Open System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Scroll down at bottom > Click the dropdown beside Default web browser > Choose your browser

If you saw my original post, that's what I did, but when I try to set up, for example, gmail in my mail program, it keeps launching Safari instead of Firefox. I'm trying to have Firefox launch instead.

On three different computers i Owen and maintain, I can switch the default web browser via the normal method.
Be it safari to Firefox or safari to chrome and back to safari

Sorry, I don't know why it is not working for you.
I changed the default web browser to Firefox, clicked a link to your post in the mail message and it opened Firefox as expected.
Right. I know. But it's not working for me. That's why I'm posting here to see if someone has had this issue and solved it. I don't need to know for whom it IS working. But thanks anyway.
