Airdropping Live Photos to Mac

I'm trying to airdrop Live Photos from my iPhone 12 (iOS 17.2.1) to my MacBook Pro (14.3 (23D56)) No matter what I do the photos aren't live by the time they get to my Mac, and insist on being dropped in the downloads instead of giving me the option to send them to my photos and keep them as Live Photos. How do I fix this? it's completely ruined the point of having Live Photos. Is there another way to send them and keep them live?

Yes, there is another way to get Live Photos from your phone to your Mac: iCloud Photos handles that just fine, but it does a lot more.

If you connect both devices to the same iCloud Photos library, all of the photos and videos on both devices, including Live Photos, will be merged into a single library that exists on both devices and in iCloud. Future additions will be added through iCloud to the other device; edits and deletions will also propagate the same way.
