Dragging and Dropping in ITunes Music

I have bunch of mpeg4 music that i cant drag and drop into itunes on my primary main imac.  I am using the latest itunes version too.  However,  bizarrely i also have an old imac with a different separate itunes account library where i have successfully dragged and dropped the same files with no problem.

Any ideas what the issue might be with itunes and how i resolve this as i need these files on my primary imac.

I am wondering if when originally dragged these onto the imac, itunes just thinks they already exist now  ?

I have also tried the following steps from previous post which havent worked:

  • Drag it into iTunes (or Music)
  • Drag it into a specific playlist (i.e., the open window of a regular playlist, not a smart playlist)
  • Drag it into the "Automatically Add..." folder  (Do this while iTunes/Music is running)
  • Use the command File > Import and navigate to its location
  • Right-click the MP3 and choose Open With > iTunes (or Music)
  • Double-click the MP3

Steve,

OK, if right-click > open with... does not work, it is unlikely the other methods will succeed.

A few questions:

  1. You said the files were MPEG-4. Is it possible that they are .mp4, i.e. protected files?
  2. If you take a "known good" MP3 or AAC file that was not even on the old machine, can you play it on the new machine using Right-click > Open With?

Hi Stevie,

That codec could apply to either a protected or unprotected file. Look at the file extension. Is the file extension .m4a or .m4p? ( BTW, .m4p is what I meant to write earlier, not .mp4.)

Also, just in case something happened to the files in the copy process coming from the old machine, can you try a brand new "known good" AAC or MP3 on the new machine?

Hi, yes, they play in quicktime on the new mac.

Well that is good news.

It would be valuable to know if a brand new MP4 would plan on the new machine. That would help distinguish if you are seeing a problem that occurred in the copying, or if something is wrong with the new system. Up to you if you want to give it a try.

Stevie, "Right-click the MP3 and choose Open With > iTunes (or Music)" is pretty much the acid test. If you do it on a valid audio file, that will start it playing whether it is or isn't already in the library. (Of course, it only works one file at a time.) If you have a bunch of files that fail the test, try re-copying them from the machine where they work.

Hi Ed, thanks for your continued help on this matter. When right clicking to obtain the file information, they have codec of MPEG-4 AAC, H.264.

I can normally drag and drop etc into iTunes and as these files have been successfully dragged into another iTunes account on different mac, it has to be an issue within iTunes. Thank you again in advance for any further advice
