Anyone else having trouble accessing Mail on mac OS 14?

I recently updated my gmail password. New password is recognized by google, I can check mail online. I prefer using mail, but now it can't seem to access my gmail account. I have manually entered the new password over and over, but it never accepts it. I get error 404.

Okay, some people say the solution is to first delete your Gmail account in Sonoma and then reestablish it again. You do this in the Internet Accounts section of System Settings. This should automatically use the new security protocols for the Mail app. Worth a try.

THIS IS THE ANSWER! I deleted my gmail account from (apple): system settings: internet accounts. Then, when I tried to add it back (same route) I noticed Safari launching. I went to the "advanced" settings and turned off your recommended option under privacy. And BINGO!! It went through! AND now it looks like Apple Mail is also back. Lesser mortals should worship at your feet! Many, many thanks!

Thanks for corroborating from above.

This fixed it for me:

Changing the default browser to Chrome resolved the issue. Then changed the default browser back to Safari.

In macOS Ventura or later

  1. From the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen, choose System Settings.
  2. Click Desktop & Dock in the sidebar.
  3. Scroll down and choose a web browser from the “Default web browser” menu on the right.

In earlier versions of macOS

  1. From the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen, choose System Preferences.
  2. Click General.
  3. Choose a web browser from the “Default web browser” menu.

I have seen similar with a "400" error...(?)

If your settings  using TouchID for Apple Pay/Apple Card….it triggers additional Safari settings…

check Safari>Settings > Advanced and uncheck "Use advanced tracking and fingerprinting protection" and compare your results.

This is known issue with Gmail that has been going on for some time now.

And Google has the gall to blame everybody else and advise them to use “a more secure app"

Sometimes you’ll see a "Password incorrect" error when you sign in to Google with a third-party app, like Apple’s Mail app, Mozilla Thunderbird, or Microsoft Outlook. If you’ve entered your password correctly but you’re still getting the error, you might need to update the app or use a more secure app.

Of course if you use Google Chrome’s Mail it all works. Fancy that.

OH Multiple Bad Words!

Looked around a little, and Google has also removed the option of "allowing less secure apps," such as an alternate (better) email program. Sigh. I guess I got lucky, cause it was working fine, but maybe I triggered the change when I updated my gmail password? Hoping the engineers at Mail can jigger us a work-around. Eventually. I love the "most recent at the top option, and that you can "see" an attachment. That alone saved my a** multiple times. Grumble Grumble.
