One user account on 2015 iMac has poor upload speed

I have a late 2015 Mac with 2 user accounts and one has expected upload speed and the other has poor upload speeds. How can this be?

Slow upload speed on only 1 of 2 user accounts on my late 2015 Mac. The other user shows normal upload speed per test. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

I see some issues in your report. First is you have CleanMyMac installed which is considered malware by most experienced users on these forums. Mac OS is catlike in that it cleans itself, Mac OS does not benefit from nor does it require any of the following types of apps:

·      Antivirus Apps

·      Cleaning Apps

·      Security Apps

·      VPN Apps

·      Maintenance Apps

What these types of apps do is the exact opposite of what users want. They make Mac OS slow, appear buggy, can damage Mac OS and sometimes create unwanted behaviors. In short, they are really bad news!

So the first order of business for your computer is that you need to locate the developers. uninstall instructions for CleanMyMac and please uninstall CMM. Because CMM is pretty nasty stuff it tends to leave parts behind after being uninstalled, a testimony to how poorly written the app is! To fully ensure you have uninstalled it please download the free version of FindAnyFile directly from the developer. Then have it search your system for the following:

  • CleanMyMac
  • MacPaw

Have it Trash any files with those names in them and then ensure the Trash is empty.

Next, there is an indication that the hard disk portion of your Fusion Drive is slow. That can be due to your Fusion Drive either failing or it may have become unfused. If it has only become unfused then it can be re-fused. Apple explains how to do this in How to fix a split Fusion Drive - Apple Support

If the HD is failing then I'd recommend simply replacing the computer as it is now obsolete, parts are tough to obtain and well a new Mac will dramatically improve performance! You can check to see if the HD is failing by downloading the free version of DriveDX and test the hard drive, not the Fusion Drive just the hard disk!! If ANY errors appear that means the HD is failing.

If the HD is failing, there is a final option you can do if you do not want to replace the computer. You can remove the Fusion Drive from the equation and add an external SSD. Doing so is a little challenging but if you follow the directions in the link below they work just fine:

Please follow the steps in How to setup an external SSD as your startup disk. The external SSD I recommend is the https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/owc-envoy-pro-sx , in my opinion this is a higher quality and faster drive that the one recommended in the setup instructions.

One account may have something installed on the computer that the other does not. Please do the following:

I used the Find Any File app and deleted all CleanMyMac and MacPaw instances on my Mac as I had previously removed CleanMyMac from my computer and therefore had no uninstall availability without reinstalling CMM. I also made sure trash was emptied. As far as the Fusion Drive possibility, my late 2015 Mac does not have Fusion Drive. Next, I downloaded and ran the DriveDx and it indicated some failing conditions in my hard rive, specifically identified in the Advance S.M.A.R.T. Status with 2 issues found. They are shown as 1% on the Load Cycle Count (id#193) and Reallocated Event Count (id#196) of 12. Both of these issues point to a failure of the hard rive in the near future and several warnings say to make sure backups are strictly maintained and I am regularly. The only thing that I am not completely understanding is that the Mac Disk Utility does not indicate any issues with the hardrive during the first aid application, but that may not be a good check for the problems identified by DriveDx. Note that the speeds did improve somewhat after removal of all CMM files and apps that were found although there is still an imbalance between the the upload results of the same test on each user account, one is roughly 500 and the other is 200Mbps. This still seems odd. Once more, thank you for the help with my issues. Much appreciated!

Just to add to the thread, I did purchase a new 24" iMac and upon completing the move of all documents etc from the old to new iMac, I had the exact same issue on the new one. Turns out Private Relay was on on one account and not the other causing a big difference in upload speeds per account. Thought to pass it along and all is good now. Considering swapping the old hardrive to an SSD and it seems doable. Any thoughts on ability to perform this, likely with the ifixit tutorial? Not really needing a spare iMac but thought to give it a go for the money involved and availability of time to do it. Thanks for any input!
