Save button keeps getting disabled across program on new macbook pro and I always have to restart the program to get it to work again.

I recently upgraded from an M1 Macbook Air to an M2 Pro Macbook Pro and the experience has been frustrating.

I been dealing with this issue for months now. At first I thought it was because I migrated my previous mac to the new one, but after a reset. The problem doesn't go away.

To describe the issue, whenever I'm using programs (apple or not), the save button will randomly grey out and I am unable to save files and documents until I restart the program.

Examples

  • Safari or browsers when saving or downloading anything
  • Logic - Saving a project
  • Office - When saving documents
  • Other programs - when saving anything.

I noticed this would happen on instances wherein.

  1. I'm jumping from one app to another.
  2. I'm opening my mac from sleep.

It's becoming a huge inconvenience, especially for those programs that doesn't have autosave.

I never experienced this in my M1 Air.

I hope somebody has a fix for this.

It sounds like you're facing a frustrating issue with the save button getting disabled across various programs on your new MacBook Pro 14" running macOS 14.3. Here are some steps you can try to address the disabled save button issue:

Fixing Disabled Save Button Issue on MacBook Pro:

1. Update macOS and Applications:

   - Ensure your MacBook Pro and all applications are up to date. Go to the Apple menu > System Preferences > Software Update to check for macOS updates. Similarly, update all your applications to the latest versions.

2. Check Permissions:

   - Verify that you have the necessary permissions to save files in the locations you're trying to save them to. Check the file/folder permissions to ensure you have the proper access.

3. Reset SMC and NVRAM:

   - Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) and Non-Volatile Random-Access Memory (NVRAM) can sometimes help resolve system-related issues. Instructions for these resets can be found on Apple's support site.

4. Disable iCloud Desktop & Documents Sync:

   - If you have iCloud Desktop & Documents enabled, try disabling it temporarily to see if it affects the save button behavior. Go to System Preferences > Apple ID > iCloud > iCloud Drive and uncheck Desktop & Documents Folders.

5. Create a New User Account:

   - Create a new user account on your MacBook Pro and see if the issue persists when using that account. This can help determine if the problem is specific to your user account settings.

6. Check for Background Processes:

   - Monitor the Activity Monitor utility for any background processes that might be consuming resources or affecting the save functionality. Close unnecessary applications and processes that might be interfering.

7. Contact Apple Support:

   - If the issue continues to persist after trying these steps, consider reaching out to Apple Support for further assistance. They can provide more personalized guidance based on your specific MacBook Pro model and software environment.
