Unable to log in after migrating my data to a new Mac

Hello,

I have purchased Mac 2018 and migrated my data using migration assistant. All went well except that I cannot log in to my new Mac. It is not a problem of password because the spinning wheel is going for ever after I put my password. When I am trying a wrong password, it tells me it’s a wrong password but when I the correct one, it keeps loading for ages. Any advice?

Thanks Luis, I followed option 1: "Command-R: Start up from the built-in macOS Recovery System. Use this key combination to reinstall the latest macOS that was installed on your system, or to use the other apps in macOS Recovery". It reinstalled the OS but kept all of files and I managed to log in successfully.

Since the issue is resolved now, do you think I should leave it here or I should delete all files and recover OS again so that I have a clean OS?

Maybe you activated FileVault, and it is somehow taking time to decrypt the drive before letting you in? How long have you left it with the spinning wheel?

Also: did you migrate everything or just the account(s)?

Migrating stuff that is too old may cause trouble if the OS is newer than what you had before.

Also, please tell us the mac model and OS version of this mac.

Thanks Luis, I am not sure if I activated FileVault. I don't think so. I left it overnight and it stayed loading. I migrated everything.

My old mac is 2013 ( Mac High Sierra 10.13.6) and my new one 2018 (macOS 14.0, Sonoma)

Thanks a lot

There is quite a jump from High Sierra to Sonoma. There were probably many third party modifications (kernel extensions, agents, daemons) that may not work correctly in Sonoma.

You should really have just imported the user accounts and nothing else.

I'd try to restore a clean OS from Recovery, and then migrate only the accounts.

You can use Migration Assistant, as before, except that instead of checking all the boxes, you should check your user account(s), and not applications, not settings, nor other files.

This wau, you will get a clean and performing Mac, as it is supposed to be.

Then you can gradually install the applications that you really need, from the App Store or the developers sites.
