This is a font problem. Gmail is asking for a font on your iMac and somehow there is a problem with that request.

Here's what worked for me but may not be a great solution, but anyway I am so happy that it's working.

With FireFox as the active application, go to the menu bar and go to Firefox/Preferences/General/Language and Appearance/Advanced. Clear the checkbox for "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of your selections above."

No restart of the computer or even Firefox required, you don't even have to refresh the gmail page. Just go back to the Gmail tab that you already have open in Firefox and it will display clearly.

This may not be a perfect solution because clearing that checkbox may cause other web pages to not display with the intended fonts.

Other solutions I read in an older thread were:

Find and delete all versions of "Helvetica Fractions" font.

Clear your Firefox cookied and cache

Copy the text from the Gmail page and paste it into a document whereupon the text will display clearly and may allow you to limp along to get where you need to be today.
