I have been using a Seagate 1TB hard drive as my Time Machine backup disk. Disk Utility cannot repair the disk. The drive is 3 months old. Is there anything I can do for it other than shoot it?
Reformat the drive with Disk Utility then restart your TM backup from scratch. Most likely the drive is not bad but it is corrupted. Depending upon what the problem is you may have luck fixing it with Disk Warrior.
Bought a 1TB Seagate drive (last year) and later in the day read about it failing, Went back to Frys and they exchanged it for a Maxtor with no questions asked. This link has mod number lists of affected drives.
Before you do anything, check the transformer!
I went through all sorts of fuss to fix, arrange repair, and / or arrange to restore a La Cie external drive that had stopped working. After lots of messing about I accidentally plugged it back into the wrong transformer and it worked.
I was lucky i had two transformers available - if you don't, its easy to think that the problem must be with the drive, and all your stuff is gone...
but it may not be..
I reformatted the drive and it worked for a while. The problems returned; I tried the repair utility and it was unable to complete its task. I am ready to give up on this drive. What are other people using for Time Capsule backups? I am been thinking about a small Drobo to clean the external hard drives off my desktop.
