Password Manager Options

I have a spreadsheet of passwords and there has to be a better way to manage them. I need some recommendations on a password manager app that is user friendly, secure and can be used across my Mac devices (iPhone, Mac and iPad). There are several products out there but I need some user tested recommendations.

iPhone 11, iOS 17

I used 1Password for a long time. But when version 7 (the last one that was a perpetual license) stopped working in Sonoma, I went to look for something else that had these requirements:

  1. It did not have a subscription fee.
  2. It did not require your passwords to be stored in your iCloud account.
  3. It did not require your passwords to be stored on any other remote server.

This left out practically everything. Whether it was free or a single cost app, almost all of them stored your passwords on a remote server. I don't care how much security they claim to have, that's an automatic "NO!" Which also meant Apple's built in password manager was out since it stores your passwords on their servers.

I tried about 8 different password managers regardless of my rules just to at least see how well they worked - or didn't. I finally hit on this one-and-only actually free, open source password manager. And your password database is stored only on your local drive. The personal version is completely free.

After getting all of my 1Password items into Enpass, and getting used to the interface, I've found it actually works much better than 1Password ever did. 1P would very often fail to automatically fill in the user name, password or both. Then even if it did, 1P would almost always just sit there and you'd have to click the Okay (or whatever button) to proceed.

There's only one site I use of a few dozen where Enpass doesn't fill in the fields and move on by itself. I could probably fix that be redoing the entry, I just haven't bothered yet.

You can search for Password storing apps in the App Store. They are plenty of those out there. You can even do some research by performing a google search on a given app and then make your decision.

I would like you to also look at your iPhone’s built-in iCloud Keychain to store passwords. More information on this feature here 👉 Set up iCloud Keychain - Apple Support

Thank you. I also heard there were some security breaches with Last Pass.

They have had some issues where some data was accessed but I think everything accessed was encrypted and I don't believe any passwords were breached or usable. However I do believe 1Password is the most transparent about their security and may be the most secure. See: https://blog.1password.com/how-1password-protects-your-data/
