Is it time to upgrade from my iPad 8th Gen?

Hi there

I’m asking a question that I know only I can answer, but would value your views and opinions.

I have the basic iPad 8th Gen, with Smart Keyboard and Apple Pencil 1st Generation.

It currently meets all my needs - I realistically use it for surfing the web most of the time, and reading the Times or Telegraph.

I have a MacBook Air M1 if I need to do anything more advanced (which wouldn’t be that complex as regardless which iPad I have I feel constrained by iPadOS compared to MacOS) - I use a windows laptop all day provided by work and like the stability of windows and find macOS gives that similar stability, which iPadOS does not.

I am not someone who upgrades products every year. I have also have an iPhone 11 and an Apple Watch 5.

That said, I have in the past kept products too long and do not want to do that again - so I am planning to trade up to a new iPhone when a 16 comes out this year, similarly to an Apple Watch 10 when that comes out - so it’s going to be an expensive year anyway.

The question is whether I trade in the iPad 8 when something newer comes out. I would probably step up to at least an Air, just because of the accessories - charging the pencil Gen 1 is annoying and would want the magnetic ease of a Gen 2. But that’s not a deal breaker, it can wait until I upgrade, whether it’s this year or later.

My main concern is the A12 chip in the iPad 8. That was the chip in iPhone XR and no idea how much longer the iPad 8 will be properly supported in terms of updates and getting the latest iPadOS.

I welcome your thoughts that will be much appreciated.

Kind regards

Justin

Your iPad8 runs the most recent version of iPadOS - currently iPadOS 17.x.

Precisely how long your iPad will continue to receive major updates will be known only to Apple. However, you can reasonably anticipate to see full update support for at least five years from model release - some models receiving major system software updates for seven or more years.

Update support will only end when the internal hardware (CPU/RAM) is insufficient to provide adequate performance with a newer version; major system software updates inevitably make greater demands upon available system resources.

If your iPad does everything that you need it to, there is no reason to replace it with a newer model. Replacement might only be contemplated when a specific hardware or software feature can only be accessed with a more recent or more advanced model of iPad.
