Macbook Pro 2019 Randomly Restarting after Sonoma Upgrade

This is downright infuriating. I have run for YEARS without any issue on my 13" 2019 Macbook Pro i7 until I updated to Sonoma. And, it does not seem as if I am the only one. Upon updating my laptop started randomly restarting. I have verified there are no diagnostic issues (none), no peripherals other than power, done a full backup to a timemachine image, no unusual apps installed (Chrome, Google Drive, Adobe Lightroom/Photoshop/Creative Cloud and MS Office are the only non-Apple apps on it), I have reinstalled Sonoma from the repair screen and yet my laptop continues to restart without prompting. I've left terminal up on my screen to see if there is a time pattern and of course there isn't. I have run the commands from terminal to identify the cause and of course it comes back with user-initiated, which it absolutely isn't. Really need to understand what is my next step. This feels like the iphone battery issue from a few years ago where Apple is trying to tell me to upgrade my laptop but given we are now months into this being a known issue with no resolution or that Apple has accepted the bug/issue, it certainly feels that way.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.13

Thinking that this one may be close to closing out...

I tried multiple different steps here

  1. Diagnostics - showed nothing
  2. Disk First Aid on the container
  3. NVRAM/PRAM reset
  4. DNSFlush
  5. Removing various software components, not that I had alot to begin with
  6. Creating a new user
  7. Reinstall of Sonoma (without a full system reset)
  8. Full reset. New install of Sonoma wiping all data

None were successful. I would be using the system and it would restart with a -20 code for no apparent reason.

The solution, and it's just a messy process, was to do a downrev to Ventura. I used OpenCore (fantastic application) to download and create a USB image to boot from. Did the full drive format, install of latest version of Ventura. I've been running for a couple of days now without issue with the same applications I had been previously running.

I don't see anything in the report other than most of the high CPU utilization in the log summaries involve the file system or internal SSD. Try running Disk Utility First Aid on the hidden Container. Within Disk Utility you may need to click "View" and select "Show All Devices" before the hidden Container appears on the left pane of Disk Utility. Even if First Aid says everything is "Ok", click "Show Details" and scroll back through the report to see if any unfixed errors are listed. If there are unfixed errors listed, then run First Aid again until they are fixed. If they cannot be repaired, then try running First Aid while booted into Recovery Mode, otherwise you will need to perform a clean install of macOS which involves first erasing the whole physical SSD (Intel Macs only) followed by reinstalling macOS & restoring from a backup.

You can try a DFU firmware "Revive" to reset the T2 security chip & system firmware since the T2 security chip is involved with everything on a 2018+ Mac.

If that doesn't work, then you should perform a clean install (or better yet a DFU firmware Restore & reinstall of macOS). Just do not install any third party apps. Do not restore from a backup. And do not sign into your AppleID or iCloud. Test the clean install under these conditions. If the issue exists with a clean install under these conditions, then you have a hardware issue with the laptop.

If a clean install does not have the problem, then you can experiment. You can try restoring just your macOS user account from a backup, or you can try reinstalling your third party apps one at a time making sure to thoroughly test the system each time before you install the next app.

FYI, the 2018-2020 Intel Macs tend to have a higher incidence of Logic Board failures than other Macs, but the 2019 models (especially the 16" model) seem to have the highest incidents of Logic Board failures (both from my own personal experience & from reading this forum).
