The Magic Keyboard Folio is for the 10th generation iPad which I suspect that you have. If this is the case, then I can clearly see your point whereby the iPad will have no support on the back if the back flap does not have a flat surface to anchor upon. I, just like you, have the same preference where I would like to be able to use the iPad, with a keyboard, on my lap or even while in bed. I found out that Magic Keyboards with the word FOLIO in the description did not work for my purpose. I, therefore, opted for the iPad Pro model which has the Magic Keyboard as an accessory that has a strong hinge and does not require a back flap to rest upon.

I do not know of a workaround for your iPad 10th generation and the Magic Keyboard Folio to be able to use it on your lap comfortably. I am sure that, on a flat surface, this combination works perfectly and provides a smooth experience. There are keyboards available on Amazon that will serve your purpose such as this one 👉 Keyboard Case for iPad 10th Generation - Amazon. These keyboards for the iPad 10th generation are not manufactured by Apple, however, work quite well under most circumstances.

In the end, the decision is yours. Not sure whether you want to end up with two keyboards for your iPad knowing that the Folio is an expensive one and performs really well.
