IPOD Classic Troubleshooting

My IPOD classic has recently been locking up when skipping to another song, having trouble downloading new songs and now has erased all of my songs and requires me to restore my settings. HELP! Have tried to reset it like the troubleshooting directs, but that only helps temporarily. What are my next steps? Thank you for your help!
